Elizabeth Brugman - Blog April 5

It has surprised me at how willing and intrigued our communicators with Russia have been and in turn how well our questions and conversations are moving along. This week a major issue has been brought up, one that I think has been forgotten about but now is becoming widely a concern, women vs. men in the workforce. In today’s society equality among everyone is something America takes pride in but when we look closely, such as gender in the working world, it is not so. I have had experience with this myself when I upgraded from being a housekeeper to a CNA. My pay did not change but when a male my age got hired at the same time, he started working at a higher pay then I did. This is when I first noticed that gender in the workforce is still an issue and creates bias. Another example that recently brought gender to my attention is when my sister graduated from pharmacy school. She and another male graduate got hired by the same company to work as pharmacists. Even though their grades and requirements were equally matched, he ended up getting offered a higher salary. Even though the gap between men and women wages is decreasing it is still a huge issue not being resolved, as the chart shows in the link I have attached. I never realized that gender is still a problem in today’s society in the U.S. It just goes to show that there are problems and issues constantly being recognized and needing to be worked on even though we may not realize, nobody’s perfect right.
