Easter in The Czech Republic, Adela Chlumecka


I am going to write about Czech Easter tradition, because it might be the weirdest tradition ever. Easter is one of the most important Christian Holidays, even though only 20-30% of Czechs are Christian.  Easter in the Czech Republic lasts two days – Easter Sunday and Monday. (But Green Thursday before Easter is important for many Czech as well, because all breweries made green beer). Easter Sunday is well known because families come together and eat traditional food – lamb, bread, eggs and drink wine). Easter Monday is more folk tradition than Christian festival. It is a day, when boys whip girls so they will stay healthy and beautiful for the next year. The Easter whip is made of braided willow twigs decorated with colorful ribbons. As a reward, girls give boys decorated eggs, chocolates and shots of homemade alcohol.  Some of guys also split water to girls.
Every year many of my friends came to my home to whip me and my sister and mother.
