Evan Hummel Blog 3:  Technology and social groups.

I believe that technology has created interaction amongst social groups that wouldn't normally happen.  For instance our live web feed with Russia is something that couldn't have happened say 30 years ago.  Also Facebook links many people that wouldn't normally interact people from all across the country.  I think it's great that we are exposed to so many different cultures and experiences through the Internet in particular.   Through my experience with Facebook I have associated with people I normally wouldn't agree with but I am exposed to their opinion.  I'm sure that many people on Facebook feel the same way about me.  I guess the one negative aspect of this social media phenomena is that it can also expose us to very negative experiences, some aspects of racism or cyber-bulling.  I've seen people attacked for their religious or political beliefs, or sexual orientation.  It can also give others access to personal or private things about your life that you don't want others to know.  Overall though I believe it is a very positive thing for social groups to interact, my experience on Facebook and other social networks has been largely positive and usually it engages me to debate people I wouldn't normally agree with and inspires me to understand their point of view.  And as to our experience with Russian students, I can't find a negative thing to say about the experience, it has been an enlightening one and makes me happy that we have the technology to be exposed to other cultures and countries.  I hope to learn a great deal from this experience.  In this post I put a link to a Facebook incident, which captures one of the possible negative outcomes of todays technology or social networking.
