Blog 2 - Elizabeth Brugman

This week we unfortunately did not get to communicate with Russia but instead were able to work with our own groups and getting a start on our projects. On Wednesday we went more in depth with inside outside groups. Talking more about social identity and how othering influences inside outside groups. My understanding is that othering puts people into outside groups. Differentiating against people by automatically putting them into certain social groups to my understanding can be described as othering. We do this by being able to identify peoples identity markers. I think people are able to pick out these identity markers right when we meet someone and do it automatically without even realizing it. I always thought others pick out your ‘identity markers’ and then put you into a certain group. After our discussion I realized that you yourself pick out your ‘markers’ and label yourself as a certain group just as much. Also by othering  and picking out identity markers we can put people into certain groups right away almost by judging them in a way. This can lead to a lot of conflict if we disagree with someone’s way of life or as we were given the example in class about the Jewish lady being discriminated again because of what she put in her cubical. I totally agree that people need to discuss, ask question and be open minded to what people have to say and believe instead of just using the excuse ‘do you and let me do me’. I am looking forward to getting more in depth with prejudices which are linked to identity markers. I want to better my knowledge on different aspects of why people close off certain groups and how keep bring about a more open mind to them. I look forward to finally presenting our power point to Russia on Monday.
