Evan Hummel Blog 2

I thought the most interesting aspects of our discussions were prejudice, privilege, and power.  Power is when one group has power over another.  Privilege and power can be connected.  Maybe a group is privileged because they have power or have been given more opportunities because of their power.  Privilege and power can be systematic and interpersonal.  One thing I liked about our discussions was the way prejudice was defined: "Out-group hateration and in-group elevation."  What this means to me is that people within a group view that group in a positive light, while they view other groups in a negative light.  Another aspect of our discussion that I enjoyed is the words we used to describe power. Words such as, advantage, majority, influence, control, earned/unearned, and access.  It seems we also have a somewhat negative association with power, I know I do.  When I think of power, I think of oppression of another group or abusing power.  Maybe this is wrong of me to have this association but I'm still in the process of learning about it.  I really want to talk more about prejudice and racism.  I would like to know why it is systematic? I look forward to further discussion on this topic and hope to learn more about my own prejudices.  I'm sure I have some that I'm not aware of.  I provided a link to this blog, with a clip of "Curb Your Enthusiasm."  It is a show with the creator of "Seinfeld", Larry David and just follows him through the predicaments of his everyday life.  This clip is of Larry David and his manager Jeff Garland going to a Palestinain restaurant (Larry David is Jewish).  This to me is just a funny example of how prejudice can manifest itself in our everyday lives.
